QATAR AIRWAYS, the national carrier of the State of Qatar, will officially move to its new home at Hamad International Airport (HIA) on 27 May.

The relocation marks another milestone in the airline’s history not least because it has been based at Doha International Airport (four kilometres from HIA) for 17 years.

Sixty per cent of the land HIA is built on was reclaimed from the sea.

Akbar Al Baker, chief executive officer of Qatar Airways, enthuses: “We have been planning for this day for a long time and 27 May will be a momentous day for both the State of Qatar and for us, as we commence operations from Hamad International Airport.”

Last December, the airline’s 77,000-sq m new air cargo facility at the new airport handled its first shipment. The self-contained terminal, which can process 1.4 million tonnes of cargo annually, contains a perishables storage area, a live animals centre, as well as a dangerous goods area.
