Volga-Dnepr’s cargo supermarket swings into action

The Volga-Dnepr Group‘s cargo supermarket strategy paid dividends for forwarder DB Schenker when it needed to transport ball valves from Australia to Italy for maintenance.
The cargo supermarket strategy, where its scheduled and charter operations are sold together, was used to transport the balls with a IL-76TD-90VD was chartered to transport the ball valves from Perth to Singapore.
From Singapore, the cargo was transferred to one of AirBridgeCargo’s scheduled B747 freighter flights to Milan Malpensa, close to where the valves were being sent for maintenance.
Robert van de Weg, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Volga-Dnepr Group said: “For this flight, speed was important but the customer also wanted to reduce the number of loading/offloading procedures or the need for trucking between hubs to ensure the safety of the cargo.
"The solution we provided was able to satisfy both criteria and was certainly helped by the fact that we have one of our IL-76TD-90VD freighters positioned in the Asia Pacific region on a permanent basis."
The cargo was transported under a single air waybill.
