American joins Delta and United in reporting Q3 cargo revenue decline

American Airlines saw cargo revenues decline during the third quarter of the year, although the drop was not as strong as that experienced by Delta.
American saw its cargo revenues decline to $180m (see tables below) during the third quarter of the year, a drop of 16.3% compared with the same period last year.
It is the third quarter in a row that the airline has recorded a decline in cargo revenues.
The drop off in cargo revenues came despite a small 0.5% year-on-year increase in cargo traffic to 569m cargo tonne miles (CMT).
Like revenues, third-quarter cargo yield per tonne mile also lags behind last year, sliding to 31.63 cents against 37.98 cents a year ago.
The overall airline recorded a record quarterly net profit of $1.7bn on the back of fuel price declines, while revenues were down 3.9% year on year to $10.7bn as passenger capacity was reduced.
American was not the only of the big three US airlines to have a tough third quarter in terms of cargo revenues.
United (see tables below) recorded a revenue decline of 0.8% on last year to $235m, while Delta recorded a 19.7% decline to $196m.
In terms of third-quarter traffic, Delta recorded a 13% slide to 557m CMT but Untied recorded a 2.6% increase to 640m CMT.
