From Russia with airfreight, Moscow volumes surge

Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport handled more than 260,000 tonnes of cargo in the first 11 months of 2017, a 30% increase on the same period last year.
Management at Russia’s largest cargo hub said that the airfreight surge was due to the “significant increase in cargo turnover on international flights”.
The volume of international freight handled by the Moscow Cargo terminal in 2017, up to November, increased by 60.8% over 2016.
For the airport’s cargo facilities as a whole, exports rose 80% and imports were up 44% in the same period. Domestic cargo recorded a 2.95% decline.
The volume of mail processed at Sheremetyevo increased by 42.4% up to 30,000 tonnes over the first 11 months of 2017.
Said an airport spokesperson: “These results prove the general trend of the intensive growth of international freight traffic at Sheremetyevo Airport in particular, and Moscow in general.”
The airport spokesperson said that the most popular international routes, accounting for more than 50% of total airfreight traffic, were China, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France and the US.
Other “highly demanded areas” were the UK, India, Israel, Thailand and South Korea. The Far East: Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, remained the busiest for domestic cargo flows.
The largest increase in outbound and transit freight traffic was marked on the routes to Zhengzhou (CGO), New York (JFK), Heathrow (LHR) and Seoul (ICH).
“The most impressive growth of inbound and transit freight traffic was seen on the routes from Delhi (DEL), Oslo (OSL), Hanoi (HAN), Brussels (BRU),” added the spokesperson.
