Latin American airfreight continues to struggle

Members of the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) reported a decline in freight tonne-kilometres (FTKs)in the first six months of the year, but the market does appear to be improving.
FTKs were 1.8% down in the first six months of 2017 compared with the same period last year as the airlines handled just under 2.04m FTKs compared with just under 2.08m FTKs in 2016.
However, FTKs for the month of June alone were 10.2% up on the same month in 2016, at 352,371 FTKs as the market showed signs of life.
Intra Latin American traffic was 4.3% up in the first six months of 2017, at 598,991FTKs, while extra Latin American traffic was 4.1% down at just over 1.5m FTKs.
Passenger traffic meanwhile continued to grow across all segments of the market. It was up 9.0% in the first six months of 2017 compared with 2016.
