CUSTOMS and border protection officers seized six kilos of the drug ephedrine – which was secreted inside 18 bicycle seats sent as air cargo shipments from China to Australia, say reports.

The drugs were discovered when the consignment was X-rayed.

Around 6.3 kilos of a white crystalline substance, turned out to be ephedrine, which is an extract from the shrubby plant Ephedra sinensis. The shrub is well known to Chinese herbalists, who call it 'Ma Huang'.

It is also used to manufacture dangerous and illegal amphetamine-type substances such as 'ice'.
