Leipzig airport cargo volumes rise 2.7% in 2014

Germany’s Leipzig/Halle airport handled 910,708 tonnes in 2014, up 2.7 per cent on prior year and crowning a decade of continuous cargo volume growth.
“Germany’s second-largest freight hub was able to continue consolidating its position as one of the most important air freight handling centres in Europe through an increase in express freight and new routes to Russia and Asia,” says Markus Kopp, chief executive at parent company Mitteldeutsche Flughafen, which also has Dresden Airport within its portfolio.
“The positive development in passenger numbers has also given us a sense of confidence; they showed significant growth from the start of the year and were able to more than compensate for reductions in routes in the budget sector.”
He added: “Overall developments in 2014 were dominated by many strikes in the air transport segment and ongoing savings programmes adopted by major airlines. It is therefore all the more gratifying to note that 2014 ended with significant growth at both our airports.”
