Air Transat brings cargo back inhouse

AIR Transat has brought its cargo operations back inhouse after 15 years of being run by a third party. From 1 November the company has started using its own fleet to transport cargo from Canada to of its current worldwide destinations.

“Our…international freight solutions will ensure Air Transat Cargo’s position as a major player in Canada,” said Allen Graham, chief executive officer of Air Transat. Graham added that “a significant investment” had been made to the project. He also claimed the carrier will double its cargo capacity by 2014.

Paul Nugent will lead the cargo unit.

Flying primarily to tourist destinations, Graham said that most of the airfreight carried will be restaurant food for hotels Latin American resorts. Returning, it would be perishable foods for Canadian supermarkets.
