Airports update 14 March

AIR Cargo News reports on new cargo developments at airports around the world this week.

Expansion plans at Indianapolis International Airport are gaining momentum, with the authority awarding contracts totalling US$12.5 million for design and construction of a 400,000 square-foot expansion to the aircraft parking and loading ramp space at the FedEx hub.

FedEx now uses 72 gates for parking and loading, including several for new 777Fs. The expanded ramp space to be built this summer will have four more gates for wide-body planes.

Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International airport has seen a drop in export cargo of 22.07 per cent, and a decrease in import cargo of 19.29 per cent in February 2011 year-on-year.s

The volume of cargo and mail handled in February 2011 at Bulgaria’s Sofia Airport (pictured) decreased by 2.2 per cent year-on-year. A four per cent drop to freighter carried cargo was reported against a 5.3 per cent increase of cargo carried on scheduled flights.
