BA strikes could ground cargo

THE threat of British Airways pilot strikes still loom as the union enters a conciliation process in a row over pay and conditions of the new subsidiary Open Skies, that will launch in April between Europe and the US.
A massive 86 per cent of the union’s pilots backed strike action that could ground worldwide services. Costing an estimated US$50 million a day, the strikes would hit both freight and passenger operations at the airline.
The pilots’ union fears pilots at BA’s new airline will be hired on different terms and conditions to those of its current staff. It says it supports the new venture but not BA’s plan to hire lower paid pilots from outside the company.
The two sides have agreed to take the issue to a “conciliation process with an independent third party”.
