BAWC to focus on high-value goods

BRITISH Airways (BA) is pushing British Airways World Cargo (BAWC) to concentrate on premium products. These include currency, livestock, perishables, pets pharmaceuticals and mail, which have been performing relatively well in the global slump in airfreight demand.

Head of business development, Adam Carson, said: “The key to improving BAWC’s yield is to sell more premium cargo.”

BA is also trying to save money by encouraging staff to make international calls on their work landlines instead of their mobile phones. Its current mobile phone bill is around £120,000 ($195,000) a month.

The cargo carrier’s volume fell 9.8 per cent in June compared to the same month last year but this was in some way made up for by revenue rising 5.3 per cent due to improved yields – capacity was cut 2.5 per cent last month, lowering the load factor by 2.2 points to 73.4 per cent.
