Cargo handler almost airborne

PASSENGERS on Republic Airlines Flight 3336 were alarmed to hear banging coming from the cargo hold on Monday 7 February.

A baggage handler at Washington’s Reagan National Airport had accidentally been locked in the cargo hold. Within minutes a third employee arrived and questioned the whereabouts of the missing colleague.

The worker was released and went on to operate the tug taking the aircraft out of the gate. The aeroplane carrying 29 passengers departed ahead of schedule.

Baggage handlers frequently enter the cargo hold but few rarely go along for the ride.

An investigation by US Airways is under way.
