Cargolux Italia sees further potential

THERE is still scope for further capacity to be added to the Italian airfreight market, despite the big influx of freighter operators in the past year, according to Lucien Schummer (right), managing director of Cargolux Italia.

“There certainly is not yet oversupply,” he says. “Rather we see room for additional services if the current growth continues. We have certain plans ourselves, though we are not yet ready to announce any at this time. But if you consider that Alitalia formerly had five freighters, while we have one and Cargoitalia has three, then there is still some catching up to do.”

He dismisses any suggestion that the influx of Asian freighter operators into Milan in the past year means the airport is now saturated. “Rather I would say it is a sign of the health of the Italian airfreight market, which deserves good direct services.”
