China stretches the tarmac

IT has five of them in the world’s top 25 air hubs by cargo volume and now China is looking to build more.

Zhejiang province plans to build two new airports and expand six airports in the 12th National Five-year Plan period from 2011 to 2015.

From January to November 2011, airports in Zhejiang handled a total of 383,000 metric tonnes of freight.

In December 2011 Shenzhen Airport (pictured) recorded 78,000 tonnes of cargo, up 3.4 per cent. For the 12 months ended 31 December 2011 freight volumes reached 828,400 tonnes, an improvement of 2.4 per cent. Shenzhen is the country’s fifth largest airport by cargo volume (including Hong Kong). In 2010 it recorded 809,125 tonnes, up 33.6 per cent on the year before.
