Delta cuts jobs

DELTA Air Lines has offered an early retirement programme for its staff in an attempt to trim capacity by eight per cent. The carrier expects about 2,000 staff to take up the offer.

In March 2008, Delta offered voluntary redundancy, which more than 4,000 workers took. Northwest, which merged with Delta last year, had also cut staff by 2,000 before the merger.

Delta wants domestic capacity cut eight per cent to 10 per cent in 2009 and international capacity down three per cent to five per cent: an overall reduction of between six to eight per cent.
