Emirates boosts UK and Ireland cargo capacity

CARGO capacity on Emirates’ Glasgow (Scotland) to Dubai (UAE) route will expand by 59 per cent following the introduction of a second daily passenger flight.
The new A340-300 flight, adding 13 tonnes of cargo potential, will commence on 1 June in response to growing demand.
Since starting in 2004, the carrier’s Glasgow service has carried over 46 million kilos of cargo to and from the Middle East and beyond.
“Increased cargo capacity means more export business opportunities for cargo shippers in Scotland,” Laurie Berryman, Emirates’ vice-president UK and Ireland, says.
The existing daytime 777-300ER has 22 tonnes of cargo capacity. Main commodities being shipped include Scottish produce such as whisky, smoked salmon and oysters, as well as items including oil-well equipment, helicopter and aircraft parts and medical equipment. There has also been an increase in demand for transporting live animals, particularly pets such as cats and dogs moving to Australia.
Emirates has also launched a new Dublin (Ireland) route with an A330-200.
As pharmaceuticals make up nearly a quarter of Ireland’s exports, they are expected to feature prominently in the cargo hold of passenger flights. Until now, Emirates SkyCargo has serviced Ireland via the UK.
