Emirates settles cargo-fix claims

EMIRATES has become the fifteenth airline to settle in an air cargo antitrust case in the US.
The airline has agreed to pay US$7.8 million to resolve the claims against it.
“We believe this cartel has affected an enormous number of businesses around the globe who were deceived into paying unlawfully inflated air cargo rates,” Hollis Salzman, managing partner of Labaton Sucharow’s Antitrust Practice Group, stated. “We are very pleased to have reached this settlement, which brings us one step closer to resolving the entire case on behalf of those who have been victimised by this far-reaching price fixing conspiracy.”
To date, plaintiffs have obtained partial settlements totalling more than $462 million with over a dozen international airlines located in five continents, including Air France/KLM/Martinair, Lan and Qantas.
Plaintiffs allege that defendants conspired on surcharges and agreed to eliminate or prevent shipping discounts and commissions between 1 January 2000 and 11 September 2006.
Almost half of all defendants named in the lawsuit have pleaded guilty. These carriers have paid or agreed to pay criminal fines exceeding $1.8 billion
