Emirates to add Basel freighter service

EMIRATES SkyCargo is strengthening trade lanes between Switzerland and its worldwide network by launching a weekly B777 freighter service between Basel and Dubai from September, writes Thelma Etim, deputy editor.
The new freighter route will supplement the existing belly-hold cargo capacity in the Swiss market provided on the carrier’s double-daily passenger services to Zurich, as well as on daily Geneva flights, says a company statement.
SkyCargo already offers more than 380 tonnes of capacity each week on its Switzerland routes.
Basel, the centre of the Swiss pharmaceuticals and chemicals industries will become the 40th European destination in the Middle East carrier’s network, giving a further boost to bi-lateral trade links already in place between the UAE and the region.
“Europe is a key growth region for us and the new scheduled freighter service will create more trade opportunities for importers and exporters across the local markets, as well as across our worldwide network.
"We are offering advanced cool chain and priority products for goods under temperature requirement, oversize cargo and highly secured product solutions for any valuable or vulnerable items,” reveals Hiran Perera, the airline’s senior vice-president of cargo planning and freighters.”
Basel’s EuroAirport director Juerg Raemi comments: “This confirms the attractiveness of our unique geographical position on the borders of France, Switzerland and Germany and near to Basel, home of many world-renowned pharmaceuticals companies."
The SyCargo decision emphasises the importance of the airport’s new cargo terminal, which is due to open at the beginning of 2015. “It offers state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled infrastructure perfectly in line with the needs of local industry and logistics companies as well as optimal freight processing,” he adds.
