European freight free fall

FREIGHT traffic at European airports declined 3.8 per cent in September 2011 compared to September 2010.
“September has seen the gap between passenger and freight traffic only get bigger (a gap of 10.8 per cent) with freight now stuck in a sustained downward trend, which looks very similar to what we experienced back in 2008,” Olivier Jankovec, director general, Airports Council International [ACI] Europe, commented. “Freight traffic perfectly reflects these developments, along with the softer growth we are seeing in Asia’s emerged economies – in particular China.”
The ACI Europe Airport Traffic Report – September 2011 shows a decrease of 2.2 per cent in freight during the third quarter, compared with the same period last year.
Year-to-date figures indicate airports in the region have seen a weak increase in freight at +1.9 per cent and movements of +4.7 per cent against last year.
