Hactl freight down in Feb

HONG Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (Hactl) released its tonnage figures for February 2009. A total of 133,624 tonnes were handled in February, down 22 per cent year-on-year. Cumulative tonnage for the first two months of the year was 276,378 tonnes, down 26.9 per cent year-on-year.

Import volume for February was 38,587 tonnes, down 20 per cent against February last year. Aggregate import volume for the first two months of 2009 was 75,218 tonnes, representing a decline of 27.9 per cent year-on-year.

Export volume for February was 64,546 tonnes, down 25.3 per cent year-on-year. Exports to Europe were particularly weak, with a significant decline of 37.7 per cent. Total export volume for January and February was 140,237 tonnes, representing a year-on-year decline of 29.4 per cent.

The transhipment volume was 30,491 tonnes in February, registering a decline of 17 per cent compared with last year. Cumulative transhipment tonnage for the first two months was 60,923 tonnes, down 18.8 per cent year-on-year.

“Notwithstanding the current difficult time, we continuously strive to provide more comprehensive service, streamline work processes and invest in upgrading facilities and hardware to make sure we will be fully geared up for resumed demand upon economic recovery,” said Lilian Chan, general manager of marketing and customer service. “It remains our top priority to uphold Hong Kong’s regional aviation hub status.”
