Hong Kong slows fall

HONG Kong airfreight traffic fell 14.4 per cent in June compared to last year, the smallest monthly decline since October. Total volume was 187,955 tonnes.

This leaves its second quarter of air cargo handled at 540,744 tonnes, down 18.5 per cent from last year, while its year-to-date total at 1,000,000 tonnes, a year-on-year decrease 21.5 per cent.

“Cargo throughput is generally a good indicator of the economy. Whilst the first half of 2009 has in general been difficult, it is delightful to observe the relatively stabilized tonnage performance over the past few months,” said Lilian Chan, general manager of marketing and customer service of Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl).
