HONG Kong Airport may well lose its number one cargo airport spot if poor volumes continue.
July figures from Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) show a total of 237,739 tonnes were handled in the month, representing a decrease of 7.7 per cent year-on-year.
The Asian airport has registered a total of 1,563,352 tonnes in the first seven months, a drop of 5.1 per cent year-on-year.
Export volume for July was 126,369 tonnes, down 9.8 per cent year-on-year. Total export volume for the period was 822,313 tonnes – representing a decline of 7.9 per cent year-on-year.
Import volume for July reached 58,904 tonnes, a reduction of 13.1 per cent against July last year. Aggregate import volume for the period of 2011 was 403,551 tonnes, sinking seven per cent against the same time last year.
Transhipment volume totalled 52,466 tonnes in July, up by 5.3 per cent year-on-year. Cumulative transhipment tonnage for the first seven months was 337,488 tonnes – a year-on-year rise of 5.3 per cent.
