India fines Alitalia for negligence

INDIA’s National Consumer Commission has ordered Italy’s Alitalia Airlines to pay over US$145,000 to a clothing exporter after finding it guilty of negligence in delivering a consignment to its client in Brazil.

“Opposite party [Alitalia Airlines] was grossly negligent in service in releasing the cargo on the basis of delivery order…the forgery of this order is writ large as it is of the date on which even the cargo was not booked,” the commission said.

The claimant, Delhi-based Toy N Toy International accused the airline of releasing the cargo without first ensuring that payment had been received.
