JAL cargo hits US$671m

JAPAN Airlines (JAL) reveals revenue from its international cargo operations rose to US$671.2m in the last financial year.
The group also recorded a $312.5m hike in domestic shipments.
“Amid the decline in overall cargo demand from overseas, we moved quickly to meet the sudden increase in demand for air transportation of automobile parts, cigarettes [and other goods] after the Great East Japan Earthquake,” the carrier states.
“Larger aircraft were also utilised in response to the urgent need for transport of goods after the severe flooding in Thailand in October.”
JAL, which has withdrawn unprofitable routes to cut costs, recorded a net profit of $2.3bn for 2011.
The news follows the carrier undergoing a major restructuring programme after filing for bankruptcy protection in 2010.
Its collapse was reportedly one of the country’s biggest corporate failures, with the firm’s shares plummeting to an all-time low.
