Lay offs at Kalitta

KALITTA Air is to lay off most of its contract workers due to the slump in global airfreight demand.

The Michigan, US-based freighter airline started well in 2000 but the economic downturn has hit it hard. Fortunately, according to owner Conrad Kalitta, the airline has no debts and so it is able to safely park its fleet of 20 aircraft.

“A year ago, we had 14 to 16 flights out of Hong Kong,” Kalitta told the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority. “This year, it is three. So in order to get through this year, we have had to cut back.”

Kalitta Air Oscoda division general manager Don Nolan said that only a few contracted employees would be kept on and, presumably in a move to please the local labour community, that all foreign nationals would be laid off.
