Lufthansa Cargo’s B777F era commences in North America

LUFTHANSA CARGO (LC) has selected North America to usher in its new era using the Boeing 777 freighter.
Atlanta, Chicago and New York are the three destinations scheduled for ‘777-treatment’ from November this year, a statement from Germany’s largest freight airline reveals.
“Thanks to its outstanding technical performance and reliability, the freighter is entering new dimensions,” enthuses Dr Karl Rudolf Rupprecht, operations board member. “It also marks a milestone on our ambitious path to lowering specific emissions by 25 per cent until 2020”.
Back in April 1972, the pioneering airline launched its first scheduled flight from Frankfurt bound for New York, using the B747-200F to transport 73 tonnes of cargo and 1.8 tonnes of mail between Europe and the USA.
But the exceptional features and benefits of the environmentally friendly twin-engine B777 are unsurpassed. The ‘plane can remain in the air for more than 10 hours; fly over 9,000 kilometres non-stop during that period and boasts a payload of 103 tonnes. Lufthansa Cargo has invested in five B777s at a list price of US$270m.
In February this year, Karl Ulrich Garnadt, LC’s chairman and chief executive, told Freighters World: “From our point of view, the B777F is now the ideal aircraft to build our future on, because it substantially cuts down on fuel burn, produces less noise and gives us more capacity per flights – so we are really looking forward to the delivery of the new aircraft.”
