Lufthansa consults Iraq airports

LUFTHANSA Consulting is evaluating ground-handling operations at three airports in Iraq.

The company will execute studies at Baghdad International, the capital’s main airport, and airports Basra and Mosul.

After two wars and years of disruption, which have caused considerable damage to the airports’ facilities, Iraq’s aviation system is now going through a phase of reconstruction, as the airports slowly return to normal operations.

The Ministry of Transport, the Iraq Civil Aviation Authority and national carrier Iraqi Airways are looking to establish ground-handling operations at the three airports, which meet international standards in preparation for the increase in cargo and passenger flows.

The project started at the end of August and is currently still in progress.

In phase one of the project, Lufthansa Consulting is developing an action plan and consulting stakeholders. In the next phase the company will manage the tender procedure and tendering for ground-handling licenses for the airports to international ground handling companies.

New handling players should be present at the three airports by the end of next year.
