Lufthansa cuts 400 more jobs

LUFTHANSA is to cut 20 per cent of its administrative jobs as part of a €1 billion (US$1.41 billion) cost-cutting programme.

The 400 positions will be removed by attrition and not renewing contracts rather than by firing anyone – at least “at present” according to Amelie Schwierholz, a Lufthansa spokeswoman. Most of the cut will be from the airline’s hub in Frankfurt.

In a letter to employees, deputy chief executive officer, Christoph Franz, wrote of the programme that Lufthansa has “no other alternative but to resort to painful measures”.

The airline has already reduced working hours for 1,000 of its ground workers as well as shortening the working weeks of Lufthansa Cargo employees.
