Masterpiece tour thanks to air cargo

IT is often true in airfreight that to specialise is a smart business model – securing a stake among a smaller number of more valuable customers.
KLM’s Art Handling wing is no exception.
Recently it was privileged enough to transport a painting by the 17th Century Dutch artist Vermeer. His The Woman in a Blue Reading a Letter is touring the globe while its Amsterdam home, the Rijksmuseum, is undergoing refurbishment.
Fiona Vanderbroeck, KLM cargo’s director of secure logistics, comments: “The Woman in a Blue Reading a Letter is not just a painting it is a masterpiece.
“We are extremely privileged to be sharing this art with the world. We transport art like this almost every day and I am very confident the Vermeer will be returned in perfect condition.
“We are growing year on year,” she says. “The art world is growing, a lot of art is going to China and we expect it to grow more.”
The Vermeer will stop off at Shanghai, China, Sao Paolo, Brazil and Los Angeles, US before returning to the Rijksmuseum for its grand reopening April 13, 2013.
