Qantas grounds A380 fleet after explosion

QANTAS has grounded its fleet of six A380s following an engine explosion mid-flight this week leading to an emergency landing at Singapore.

Qantas’s chief executive officer, Alan Joyce, said the explosion was most likely the result of a “material failure or a design issue”.

“This issue does not relate to maintenance,” he said. “This is an engine issue.”

Rolls Royce, which is conducting an investigation in Australia over the cause of the engine explosion, said it could not comment until it had concrete findings.

Other A380-owning airlines have resumed flights with the aircraft after performing maintenance checks.
