Retail boost to airfreight

US retailers are reporting a record start to the shopping season according to the National Retail Forum.
The traditional Black Friday post Thanksgiving Day kick to the run up to Christmas is thought to be larger than usual – up 4.1 per cent this year to US$586 bn.
The news is great news for air cargo figures, which should see a bounce from renewing consumer confidence.
“Like pumpkin pie and football, Thanksgiving Day shopping is quickly becoming a holiday tradition for millions of Americans,” said NRF president and chief executive Matthew Shay.
“It is evident retailers’ promotions have really struck a chord with those looking for the perfect gift – either for themselves or for others.
“To keep their customers excited about holiday shopping, retailers will continue to offer attractive promotions through December, and provide strong consumer value with low prices, enhanced mobile and online offerings.”
According to an NRF annual survey, average holiday shopper spent US$423 this past weekend, up from US$398 last year with total spending reaching an estimated US$59.1bn.
