Sofia Airport sees slight cargo rise

CARGO traffic registered in 2010 at Sofia Airport in Bulgaria saw an increase of just
200 tons more than in 2009.

The volume of cargo and postal shipments amounted to 15,300 tons for the year.

The airport’s net profit in 2010 was about 14 million leva (US$9.88 million), unchanged from the previous year. The company said that the reason for the projected unsatisfactory earnings was the fact that it lost its dominant position as the sole ground operator in the country.

Sofia Airport projects that the pace of passengers and cargo growth this year will be almost the same as that in 2010.

In related news, Greek Goldair Handling Company has shown considerable interest in the possible concession for the construction of a cargo terminal at Sofia airport. Sofia Airport lacks a modern cargo terminal to handle goods and products transported to third countries through Bulgaria.

“If a concession for the construction of such a facility is announced, we will consider the conditions, and we may table a bid, as our main business involves the development of passenger and ramp ground handling services,” Mr. Kallinikos, executive vice-president of Goldair Handling, says.
