Upbeat Emirates expects to take all its freighters

THERE are still no signs of a double dip recession, and Emirates expects ultimately to deploy all the widebody freighters ordered on its behalf by Dubai Aerospace. Such is the bullish outlook from Ram Menen (right), divisional senior vice-president cargo at Emirates.

“The market has done exactly what we predicted it would do at the start of 2009, at the depths of the crisis,” he says. “When we said the market would come back in the last quarter of that year, everyone said we were too optimistic. But now it appears that we were not optimistic enough.

“This is the new 21st century reality. The downturns are sharper but the bounce-back is more pronounced.”

The confidence comes as Emirates sees strong recovery across the globe, with only a slight “hesitation” in the European market. Menen says this is nothing that could be described as a slowdown, but he does note an increase in demand for sea-air that could be due to companies trying to save costs.
