Virgin adopts hi-tech onboard cargo tracking

Its SENTRY Flightsafe GPS device allows customers moving vulnerable and valuable shipments around the world to monitor the location and environmental conditions of their shipments on the ground and in the air – in real-time.
Paul Rodwell, the company’s head of international business development, says: “The number of operators working with OnAsset to approve SENTRY FlightSafe is extensive.”
Virgin Atlantic Cargo is the first British airline to accept the tracking device on its aircraft and John Lloyd, the carrier’s director of cargo, points out that even though customers can already track their cargo shipments via Virgin Cargo’s website, “we are always looking to provide other choices that increase the benefits we offer.”
FlightSafe provides critical data that enables airline customers to intervene to reduce or eliminate losses related to the integrity of the cargo.
A highly-advanced wireless tracking device, it includes multiple sensors such as temperature, humidity, pressure, shock, location and vibration with an additional feature, FlightSafe®, which enables the device to use multiple modes of sensing and proprietary logic to automatically turn off its wireless transmitting radios to ensure safe and regulatory compliance throughout the duration of flight. It requires no human intervention to operate it.
