Volume hike sparks air freight station plan

PLANS are afoot to build an air freight station near Chennai International Airport (India) to cut congestion at the city’s port.
The facility would be built on land owned by the southern city’s port trust.“The location is ideal for this facility as cargo volumes through the Chennai Airport are on the increase,” states a trust official.
“An aircraft’s cargo will be shifted to the station and consignees can take delivery of the cargo after statutory clearances and duty.”
He adds: “The station will help avoid congestion at the gateway airports. The advantages include [the establishment of] an integrated chain and customised logistics.”
The move will also lead to imported goods spending less time at the airport and thereby providing fewer opportunities for products to become damaged, according to the trust.
