The Ekiti State Agro-Allied International Airport in Nigeria has officially opened with plans for a cargo facility.

The first aircraft to land at the new airport was an ATR 42 Nigeria Air Force aircraft, said the Government of Ekiti State.

Minister of Aviation Senator Hadi Sirika said that the federal government would site a cargo facility at the airport.

He described Ekiti Airport as a “very important project” which would facilitate import and export of goods and commodities.

Sirika noted: “35% of global trade by value is moved through airports and $18.6bn of cargo is moved daily through air transportation.”

This investment in a new airport is expected to boost exports of agricultural produce, service educational and health institutions and aid tourism, said the Government of Ekiti State.
