Maersk has appointed John Wetherell as the global head of airfreight forwarding.

This is a new role that creates a defined focus on leadership of Maersk’s airfreight forwarding business, said Maersk.

Since taking up his new role on April 8, Wetherell’s responsibilities have spanned commercial carrier management, procurement, strategic network planning and design, operational excellence, and growth.

He has 30 years of experience in the 3PL industry and expertise in product management, honed through leadership roles in large regional and global air product teams across North America, Europe and Asia.

He previously held senior airfreight leadership roles with CEVA Logistics, the former UTi Worldwide (now DSV), and former Exel PLC (now DHL).

Before being appointed to his current role, Wetherell served as Maersk’s regional head of airfreight in North America, a role that will now be assumed by Brent Mayhew.

With over 20 years in the logistics industry, Mayhew has  leadership and operational experience in companies including CEVA Logistics, Kuehne+Nagel, and DHL.

Meanwhile, Todd Hildreth will continue to lead Maersk’s global Own Controlled Flight Operations (OCFO) which currently incorporates dedicated capacity flown by three different air carriers – Maersk Air Cargo, with its Europe-China routes; Amerijet, conducting transpacific flights from North America to Asia; and Magma with its transatlantic flights from Europe to North America.

Murali Rajamani, global head of Transported by Maersk Product, said: “In recent years, we have doubled our air freight business, become a top global air freight forwarder, and won the air freight carrier of the year award in India. John is the ideal leader to elevate our air freight business even higher as we continue our growth plans.”
