Heathrow Terminal 1 bows out

One of the UK’s oldest operational air terminals, Heathrow Terminal 1, has been closed to make room for future expansion of the London hub airport. With the departure of the last flight, a British Airways service to Hanover, on 29 June, the 1968-built facility is set to be demolished and the space filled by an expanded Terminal 2. The latter would be extended still further of the Government gives the go-ahead for a third runway at Heathrow.
Terminal 2 will be expanded to take the place of Terminal 1 and if the government supports a third runway at Heathrow then Terminal 2 will be extended further still. A commission on runway expansion in south-east England, chaired by Sir Howard Davies, is expected to publish its report very shortly.
