Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics opens new facility in Constance

Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics (SPPAL) officially opened its new manufacturing facility in Constance, Germany, on February 20.
Siemens manufactures products and systems for the postal, parcel and airport logistics market at the new plant.
“We are proud of this modern production site, where we manufacture innovative products and solutions for our customers all around the world,” enthused Michael Reichle, SPPAL chief executive, at the inaugural ceremony.
“Bringing the development and manufacture of our products together under one roof is a decisive success factor,” he continued.
“It enables us to efficiently develop innovative and forward-looking system concepts for logistical sorting processes ready for commercial maturity.
“Thanks to the quality products we produce here as well as our automation expertise and long years of experience in software we are able to help our customers benefit from trends such as the booming e-commerce business, growing mobility worldwide and Industry 4.0”.
Industry 4 is the trend toward greater automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies, the move towards the ‘smart factory’.
SPPAL has made many extensive improvements to its Constance site – from what it describes as an “intelligent factory layout to well thought-out production and assembly processes, resulting, among other things, in shorter throughput times”.
Plus, Siemens has been able to further expand the manufacture of heavy systems for the parcel and airport sectors.
The main manufacturing area has a floor space of almost 14,000 sq m, while ergonomic workstations offer employees features including height-adjustable work benches and modern equipment such as cranes and hoisting gear.
“We consistently work hard to focus on serving our customers even better in the future. Our employees, too, profit from the investments we make in the future,” Reichle said.
Following the establishment of an Innovation and Test Center for parcel logistics in Nuremberg and the move to the new headquarters in Constance, the opening of this new manufacturing site constitutes what Siemens said represents an “important milestone for SPPAL in its reorganisation of the company”.
Work on the new building was initially begun in November 2015.
SPPAL has around 3,000 employees based around the world, 600 of them in Constance. Following the move to the new company headquarters and the opening of the new manufacturing plant, the previous site has been completely given up by Siemens and those premises are currently undergoing development for other purposes.
