Airfreight market heats up in July

Freight volumes continued to increase in July, said Airports Council International (ACI) in its latest figures. Traffic was boosted 8.4% by strengthening global trade and industrial production, the trade group commented.
Year-to-date global volume growth reached 8.4%, “a particularly stark contrast with July 2016, where this number stood at 0.9%”, commented ACI.
Most regions posted strong freight growth in July, with Africa leading at 18.1%, followed by Europe (11.2%), the Middle East (10.6%) and Asia-Pacific (9.3%). North America and Latin-America and Caribbean were more muted, increasing 6.5% and 3.8% respectively, in line with their year to date numbers.
South Africa and Kenya both posted growth rates of more than 20%. Most countries in Europe grew in July, with the two largest freight markets in the region, Germany and the UK, making a significant contribution, at 9.3% and 12.5% respectively.
Istanbul Atatürk Airport freight volume rose 32.2% year on year and, continuing a trend started in March, London Heathrow also made a significant contribution, growing 15.1% in July. Despite a decrease in passenger traffic at Doha International Airport due to the ongoing diplomatic row with neighbouring countries, freight continued its sustained growth, reaching 14.5% year on year.
