Shannon finishes runway work eight weeks early

Shannon Airport in the west of Ireland has completed a €15m runway resurfacing project on eight weeks early.
Lagan Asphalt Group started work on the main Shannon runway, Ireland’s longest, in May, including the full rehabilitation of 2,400m of runway surface, replacement of edge and centre line lighting with LEDs, ducting and other associated works.
A team of 90 people and 70 vehicles worked on the runway at night to avoid disrupting flights and, at the peak of the project, Lagan Asphalt laid the equivalent of one football pitch of refurbished surface every night.
The project is part a €15m investment programme financed through an Ireland Strategic Investment Fund loan.
Shannon Group chief executive Matthew Thomas, said: “The runway is the main artery of Shannon Airport and has been one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in the South-West since its construction in 1961. It provides a crucial link to the global community and has facilitated the growth of business in the region for over 55 years.”
Lagan Asphalt has also recently completed improvements to the M18 & N17 motorways between Gort and Tuam which will improve safety and ease traffic congestion on the approaches to the airport.
