Cathay to launch seasonal Cape Town connection

Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific will launch a seasonal non-stop service to Cape Town later this year.

A three times a week service flown by A350-900 aircraft will operate from November 13 this year until February 18 2019.

This service will complement Cathay Pacific’s current daily non-stop flights to Johannesburg.

Cathay Pacific chief executive Rupert Hogg said: “Growing our reach to destinations that are not otherwise served from Hong Kong creates considerable new opportunities for business, trade and tourism, in addition to strengthening our home hub.”

This latest route addition forms part of a wider process of network expansion, Cathay Pacific noted. In 2017, the carrier launched services to Tel Aviv, Barcelona and Christchurch, while this January saw the inauguration of a new service to Nanning in China.

Other international connections expected to commence this year include Brussels in March, Copenhagen in May, Dublin in June and Washington DC in September.

Cathay Pacific saw cargo demand increase by 10.5% year-on-year in January, flying a total of 954m cargo and mail revenue tonne- km.

This figure represented the group’s strongest January on record (records beginning in 2011) and was up on the 9% year-on-year growth registered for 2017 as a whole.
