Mixed June for MAG’s UK airports

UK airport group MAG saw cargo throughput fall at two of its three hubs in June.
Manchester airport recorded a 7% fall in June to 10,187 tonnes, while London-Stansted saw its volumes decline 2.2% to 21,637 tonnes.
UK express operators hub East Midlands airport saw its monthly cargo volumes edge ahead 0.9% to just over 31,000 tonnes.
MAG is now calling on UK government to present specific and practical proposals to maximise the potential of other airports – "not least because new capacity at Heathrow is more than a decade away".
A Parliamentary vote in June gave the go ahead for a new runway at Heathrow Airport and the UK government also confirmed its support for other UK airports looking to make best use of existing runway capacity.
Charlie Cornish, MAG chief executive, said:“The government’s support for airports looking to make the best use of existing capacity provides a clear framework for growth, and it is critical that it now matches its backing for Heathrow expansion with specific and practical proposals to improve rail access and maximise the potential of airports like Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands.
“Manchester and London Stansted are the two largest UK airports with significant runway capacity and our investment will allow us to meet continued demand for aviation growth both in and out of the UK."
