October proves to be a tough month for Europe’s major cargo hubs

European airports recorded “moderate” freight traffic growth in October, according to the latest statistics from Airports Council International (ACI).
The latest ACI Europe figures show an improvement in air cargo demand of 1.9% year on year during the month, with non-European Union (EU) hubs making gains of 4.1% and those within the EU noting a 1.5% increase.
The October increase is slower than the improvement recorded over the first 10 months of the year of 2.6%, showing that growth has slowed as the year progressed.
Of the major airports on the continent, Paris CDG was the big winner as it noted a 5.6% year-on-year increase in demand in October to 187,014 tonnes, bringing its figures for the first ten months to a decline of 0.2%.
The other major cargo hubs did not fare quite so well. Frankfurt, the region’s busiest cargo hub, saw cargo traffic for October decrease by 0.8% year on year to 183,392 tonnes while over the first ten months volumes are down by 1.4%.
At London Heathrow there was a 2.9% drop off in cargo demand to 150,070 tonnes but over the first ten months there has been an increase of 1%.
Finally, Schiphol registered a 1.6% fall in cargo demand during the month to 153,064 tonnes and there was a 2.8% decline for the January-October period.
