Atlas Air takes delivery of another B747F

Atlas Air has continued to expand its fleet of widebody freighters through the addition of its latest B747-8 aircraft – one of the last iconic ‘jumbo jets’ that will be built.

The aircraft is the second of four new B747-8 freighters ordered by Atlas Air in 2021. These are the last 747-8 freighters ever to be produced by Boeing.

All of the freighters are due to be delivered this year.

The aircraft has been placed under a long-term agreement with an existing customer.

“The 747-8F is the most capable, technologically advanced and environmentally friendly widebody freighter, providing 20% higher payload capacity and 16% lower fuel consumption than the very capable 747-400F,” Atlas said.

John Dietrich, president and chief executive, Atlas Air Worldwide, said: “We are pleased to receive this additional B747-8F, and to add more capacity and value to our customers.

“Atlas’ investment in these new aircraft underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship through the reduction of aircraft emissions, resource consumption and noise.”

Earlier this year, Atlas Air Worldwide entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by an investor group in an all-cash transaction with an enterprise valuation of approximately $5.2bn.

The takeover is led by funds managed by affiliates of Apollo, affiliates of JF Lehman & Company, and Hill City Capital.

The company has struck a series of long-term deals over the last couple of years, which helped it to report increases in profits last year.

In total, Atlas Air Worldwide operates 54 Boeing 747s: 10 B747-8Fs, 35 B747-400Fs, five B747-400 passenger and four Large Cargo Freighters (LCFs).
