Atlas’ Michael Steen appointed to IATA’s board of governors

Atlas Air chief executive and president Michael Steen has been appointed to IATA’s board of governors.

The move will be a boost to cargo representation at IATA as Steen will help shape industry standards, influence aviation policy and advance initiatives supporting global connectivity and a “safe, secure, and sustainable aviation sector”.

Steen has more than 30 years of experience in aviation and logistics, including 17 years of executive leadership experience with Atlas, and previously served as chairman of IATA’s Cargo Advisory Board.

“The role of aviation and air cargo in particular has never been more critical to the global economy,” said Steen. “I look forward to collaborating with industry leaders to support our shared goals, including aviation safety, resilience, sustainability, and operational efficiency that benefit our customers and communities worldwide.”

IATA director general Willie Walsh added: “His expertise in air cargo and commitment to the aviation industry will be invaluable as we address critical challenges like decarbonisation, air traffic modernisation, and supply chain resilience.

“Michael’s leadership will be instrumental in our efforts to making aviation safer, more efficient, and better connected globally.”

Steen was appointed as chief executive and president of Atlas Air in June 2023.
