IAG’s new 787-9 Dreamliner packs a punch

IAG has taken delivery of its first 787-9 Dreamliner, a pharma-friendly bellyhold aircraft.
While by no means the largest aircraft in the Anglo-Spanish carrier’s fleet, the dash 9 variant of the Dreamliner will offer one of the largest cargo capacities — 22 tonnes over seven pallet positions — larger than a passenger 747 or even a 777-200, according to an IAG Cargo spokesman.
Moreover, the new aircraft offers twin holds, one of which can be operated in chilled mode, making it ideal for pharmaceuticals and fresh produce.
IAG, which already has 787-8s in its fleet, will take delivery of a further eleven 787-9s between 2016 and 2018. The carrier will also be adding 787-10s, which will offer yet more cargo capacity. In fact, IAG Cargo will soon have 787s in service on all its major pharma routes.
The 787 owes its cargo carrying capability to its ‘flat underbelly profile — the front and rear underside taper is much shorter than on other aircraft such as the 747 — and its relatively low passenger density.
The first commercial flight by an IAG 787-9, operated by its British Airways arm, will be on October 25, from London to Delhi. The new aircraft will also fly to Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Austin, Kuala Lumpur and San Jose.
