Hactl and ABC overcome outsize challenge

First published in June 2018:

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has handled two Boeing 747-8 Freighter charter flights operated by Russian all-cargo carrier AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC), each carrying nearly 19 tonnes of 20m-long machinery components from Schiphol to Hong Kong.

Hactl chief operating officer Chee Hong Tan noted: “These were among the longest shipments we have unloaded from B747 freighters, and required extreme care due to their size, weight and delicate nature.”

The long components had to be secured to customised built-up pallets and unloaded through the nose doors of the brand-new aircraft. Due to local regulations prohibiting the use of cranes, Hactl used four maindeck loaders in perfect alignment to lower the cargo carefully to the ground.

In addition, in order to avoid any sharp turns in transporting the unloaded shipments to the airport’s cargo terminal, traffic on the ramp road was temporarily re-routed and a direct path to the terminal cordoned off.

Sergey Lazarev, general director of ABC, said: “For such a sophisticated and challenging shipment, the abcXL team and Hactl have performed delicate workmanship, making sure the cargo was smoothly transported and unloaded.”

From Hong Kong, the components were bound for Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland.
