Brazilian integrated logistics company Modern Logistics will begin the first phase of its international expansion strategy later this month and has further plans to expand its fleet.
As previously announced, the expansion strategy comprises two stages. The initial phase will begin on August 15 and expand Modern’s service to Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.
The second phase will target Mexico and the US within six to twelve months.
Chief executive Cristiano Koga said: “We will start with at least two weekly frequencies [for each route]. We are still defining the days of the week. In terms of capacity, it is 20 to 22 tons per leg.”
These expansion plans are being supported by Modern Logistics’ acquisition of two 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters (BCFs).
Modern Logistics acquired its first 737-800BCF in October last year, which marked the first 737-800 ever within Brazil’s logistics industry.
Then the São Paulo-based company took delivery of its second 737-800BCF in March.
Leased through Babcock & Brown Aircraft Management (BBAM), the two aircraft are expected to help Modern Logistics increase market share internationally, plus establish a facility in Miami.
Going forward, Modern Logistics aims to acquire additional freighters for underserved regional airports as part of its five-year plan. “We have options for expanding our fleet. With international accreditation, we will be able to acquire two 737-800 NG aircraft in 12 months,” said Koga.
Modern Logistics also currently has three classic 737s in its fleet – two 737-300Fs, and one 737-400F.
The introduction of the new 737-800s is part of a fleet renewal plan to enhance operational efficiency.
As the replacement of the existing fleet will take place gradually, the company said it will operate both classic and new generation 737s over the near term.
