Siemens’ rotor to Kuwait is project managed by Volga-Dnepr

Volga-Dnepr Airlines has completed the urgent delivery of a 57-tonne generator rotor to Kuwait on behalf of energy shipper Siemens.
Siemens asked Volga-Dnepr to project manage the shipment using one of the Russian airline’s An-124-100 freighters to ensure that the 11-metre long cargo reached its destination on-time from the manufacturing site in Mulheim, Germany.
As part of Volga-Dnepr’s ‘Cargo Supermarket’ service, the airline organised the shipment’s security screening at Cologne Airport, crane hire to load the rotor onto the An-124-100 and the load’s export documentation.
The airline also arranged for a crane to be waiting in Kuwait to ensure a safe and timely unloading of the cargo, organised its transfer to the warehouse holding area at the airport, and made sure the crane was repositioned to load the rotor onto a truck for the final leg of its journey.
Steve Downing, head of logistics UK, at Volga-Dnepr, said: “We have a well-established framework agreement with Siemens that means we understand their requirements and can react quickly, and provide the most cost efficient solutions when they need our expertise.
"We have carried shipments for Siemens regularly over many years but there is no doubt that the development of our engineering and logistics services for very heavy, outsize and complex cargoes has reinforced our relationship because it has extended our capability to a total delivery solution when required.”
